Berkeley, California – August 1, 2021

On August 1st, we came together to celebrate Aidan’s life with music, stories, and songs. We gathered at King Middle School where Aidan met fantastic friends. He learned to play big band music and jazz. He deepened his love of ultimate frisbee, and with that very special class of 8th graders in 2015, King won Middle School States. King continued to be a favorite hangout place for the rest of his life.

As a family we have spent so much time at King. Last winter, during the pandemic, when Aidan was home from college we played family basketball games nearly every day on the court.

We are so grateful for many friends, teachers, and collaborators who shared their talents in celebrating Aidan’s life in a way that he would have loved. And to our entire community for the love and hard work that made this memorial possible.

The reception was in the Edible Schoolyard which was a magical place for Aidan. A fruit tree will be planted in his memory there this winter, once we have more rain. It will be overlooking the sports fields where all of us continue to play frisbee.

Carleton College – September 26, 2021

Carleton honored Aidan’s life with a Memorial Service on September 26th in Skinner Chapel. It was a beautiful coming together of our Carleton community and Aidan’s. Due to the pandemic we were never on campus when he was a student. His friends welcomed us and his Berkeley friends for the weekend. Read Caitie and Rich’s remarks here.

Before the Memorial, the CUT and Syzygy frisbee teams organized a pickup game that Aidan’s Berkeley friends, Caitie, and Emmett joined. We played on Al Duerr field, named in memory of one of Rich’s friends and teammates, and where Rich and Caitie played when we were students. It was so meaningful to be together, and to carry forward the joy we each felt playing with Aidan, and to remember what Spirit of the Game is all about.

Carleton has a sculpture to remember all students who died during their Carleton education. Each student is remembered by a ring.

Chazy, New York – August 7, 2021

On August 7th, Aidan was buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Champlain, NY where Caitie’s ancestors have been buried for nearly 200 years. The cemetery is close to her family’s home in Chazy, NY where Aidan spent many family holidays.

After the burial, we gathered for a family dinner by the lake and sang songs together into the night.
